Something different

I'm trying something different. I don't normally hand piece and I don't usually use modern fabrics so I'm not too sure how it will look when finished. I am making a quilt designed by Sandra Boyle. The centre has these 4 Peony blocks  with a single fabric as the alternate block throughout. Then there is a row of Stars, followed by a ring of Birds in the Air,  Crossroads, Square in a Square, Stars again and finished with a border of Half Stars. Phew!

I then completed the first Stars of many.

I have spent the hours doing this- and many more hours to come.

so that I can eventually do a lot of this.

When I was at my sewing group on Monday surrounded by hand piecers and I mentioned how long it had taken to draw the sewing lines and cut the pieces out ,there was a laugh of knowing, funny how they had all kept this bit of information to themselves.

  1. Beautiful work! I love this project. The prep work does seem to take much longer than the actual piecing doesn't it?:)

  2. Your hand piecing is looking good. As for the preparation......it's all just part of the process!

  3. The blocks look great Dorothy and it looks like once that prep is done, you can get on with the sewing process.

  4. Dorothy, the great part is that once you have the pieces prepped, you can take it anywhere and are not tied to a sewing machine. Also, your blocks will turn out the perfect size and everything will line up. And no problem with Y seams. And I could go on. Can you tell I love hand piecing? LOL :)

  5. It looks like it is going to be a beautiful quilt. I enjoy hand sewing small quilts, but I think I would never finish something like that, lol. I can't wait to see how it looks, all together.

  6. That's because they wanted you to become a member of the group. I have only hand pieced one little quilt. It was fun but not for me. Yours looks lovely.

  7. Your blocks are looking lovely, I was just thinking the same thing about hand piecing, all the marking and cutting takes longer than the piecing itself, but I do enjoy the hand piecing, so easy to take along somewhere and stitch while you are waiting and before you know it you have a couple more blocks done.
