Looking at my UFO's

I've been going through my baskets of projects started and trying to decide whither I will continue, finish it where it is or put it back in the cupboard for another week, month, year.
Why did it end up like this? Did I just find a nicer quilt to make? Were the fabrics the wrong choice? and will I ever get around to completing it? I'd love to hear what you do with your UFO's.
At last year's Symposium, run by my guild, I started a Red and Green quilt being designed by Sandra Boyle. I had a Moda Layer Cake of fabric I decided would be fine with a few greens added. I decided last week to finish it where it was and cut the remaining fabric into squares to be the sashing.

I have nearly finished the applique on the 1st block of Coxcombs and Stars. I now need to prepare the top border as this is the next piece of the pattern and it will be nice to have it ready to go.

  1. That's a lovely finish to your UFO. I try not to have too many ufo's, but sometimes you just know you won't finish a project, so I try to re-home or donate it.

  2. I have found that I start something, thinking I like it and then lose interest. WIth the wool quilt I had it sitting for three years, then I just felt like finishing it, so better to put them aside until you are in the mood for them, or you won't enjoy them.

  3. This is so pretty, I can't imagine why it would have been abandoned. Something else must have caught your eye - that's what usually happens to me. I don't think about my UFOs or I'll get depressed. I just figure most of us have them, and don't feel obligated anymore, to finish them.

  4. I don't know what you left off but it is lovely the way it is.

  5. Dorothy, I love this quilt top! It's bright and cheerful, and full of whimsy, too. The way you handled the sashing adds a playfulness that is just charming. Great job!
What do I do with UFOs? I only work on a couple of projects at a time. I don't usually have UFOs, but if I had something I no longer wanted to finish, I would either discard/donate it, take it apart to use the fabric in something else or repurpose it into a smaller project.

  6. Nice idea to cut the remaining layer cake pieces into squares for sashing. It works very well for your applique blocks. Very pretty.

  9. Great way to finish a project that is no longer "speaking" to you - though I'm not sure why it did. I think it is a fabulous project, and your work is lovely! That's one that calls for hand quilting - and at the moment I can't remember whether or not you are a hand quilter. I know that's what I'd be tempted to do.

  10. 2 years ago, flying high in the air it hit me. What if...and my sons have to clear up my sewing room? So. When we were safe on ground again I started finishing UFO's. Very satisfying. And I love them all and enjoy every minute with quilting. Arie.
